AI strategy for businesses that need to actually ship it.

26 years inside NZ business. Now helping firms cut through the AI hype, pick the right tools, and put working AI into operations by Monday, not someday.

What we do

Six engagements. One outcome: AI that pays off.

Built around what businesses actually need from an AI advisor in 2026: a clear-eyed audit, a stack that fits, workflows the team uses, and a plan to keep both the regulator and the CFO happy.

01 · DIAGNOSTIC

AI Readiness Audit

A 2-week structured diagnostic. Where you are, where AI can add value, what's noise. We rate your stack, your data, your team, your compliance posture, and produce a prioritised roadmap.

  • Current-state stack assessment
  • Workflow-by-workflow ROI mapping
  • Risk + compliance register
  • 12-month prioritised roadmap
2 weeksFrom $9k+GST
02 · DECISION

Tool Stack Selection

There are 600+ AI tools claiming to do your job. Most don't. We match-make the right ones for your specific business and budget, with the receipts (real comparison testing, not vendor pitch).

  • Side-by-side vendor evaluation
  • Live pilot of top 3 candidates
  • Total-cost-of-ownership modelling
  • Procurement + contract review
1-2 weeksFrom $4.5k+GST
03 · IMPLEMENTATION

Workflow Integration

Not slides about AI. A working workflow your team uses on Monday. We embed with your team for 4-12 weeks, build the workflow, train the users, and hand it over running.

  • Workflow design + UX
  • Prompt engineering + guardrails
  • Team training + adoption tracking
  • Production handover + runbook
4-12 weeksFrom $18k+GST
04 · RISK

Risk + Compliance Review

Especially relevant for regulated industries (financial advice, accounting, legal). FMA, IRD, Privacy Act, copyright, data residency. We map your AI use against the rules and tell you what's safe.

  • Privacy Act 2020 assessment
  • Sector-specific compliance (FMA, MoJ, IRD)
  • Data residency + vendor due-diligence
  • Acceptable use policy drafting
1-3 weeksFrom $5.5k+GST
05 · ONGOING

Fractional AI Director

4-6 hours a month, ongoing. Strategic oversight without hiring a full-time head of AI. Reviews, vendor calls, board-level updates, and sanity-checks before you sign anything new.

  • Monthly strategy review
  • Vendor pitch sit-ins
  • Quarterly board memo
  • On-call for new-tool decisions
Monthly retainer$2.8k+GST/mo
06 · UPLIFT

Team Training

Practical workshops, not theoretical AI. "Here's how you use Claude / ChatGPT / Copilot for your actual day job." One day on-site, then four weeks of structured practice with weekly check-ins.

  • Role-specific use cases
  • Prompt patterns library
  • 4 weeks of structured practice
  • Measurable adoption metrics
1 day + 4 weeksFrom $6k+GST
How it works

Four phases. No deck-only deliverables.

Most AI consulting engagements end with a slide deck and a hopeful look. We end with a workflow your team uses, with documentation, with measurable ROI, and a plan for what comes next.

Week 1-2

Diagnose

Understand the business, the existing stack, the team's capability, the constraints. Output: structured audit, risk register, top-10 ROI candidates.

Week 2-3

Roadmap

Prioritise the candidates by impact and effort. Sequence them. Choose the tools. Get sign-off from the people who'll actually use it.

Week 3-12

Implement

Build the first workflow. Embed with the team. Iterate. Measure. Ship to production once it's doing what we promised.

Ongoing

Sustain

Models change. Vendors disappear. Compliance rules tighten. We can stay on as fractional AI director, or hand it cleanly to your team with documentation.

The principles

How we think about AI.

P01

We don't sell AI. We help you decide if you need it.

The market is full of consultants who'll convince you that AI is the answer to questions you haven't asked yet. The first job is to tell you honestly where AI moves the needle in your business and where it doesn't. Sometimes the answer is "not yet."

P02

Hype is a tax. The right tool is rarely the loudest.

The headline tool is rarely the one your team should use. The winning stack is usually a quiet workflow combining 2-3 tools you've already heard of, configured well, with rails around them. Boring beats brilliant when the goal is daily use.

P03

AI is a workflow problem before it's a model problem.

Picking the right model gets you 20% of the value. The other 80% is the workflow around it: where it slots into the team's day, what they do with the output, how they verify it. Most failed AI projects are failed workflows, not failed models.

P04

Compliance and risk are not someone else's job.

In NZ, regulated industries (financial advice, accounting, legal, health) have specific rules about what AI can and can't do, where data can sit, what disclosure is required. These get harder every year. We build compliance into the workflow on day one, not as an audit afterthought.

Most NZ firms are spending money on AI tools they don't use, while ignoring AI tools that would change everything. The gap isn't capability. It's clarity. Craig Coupland · Founder, Coupland Consulting
Sample engagement · accounting firm · 40 staff

From 23 vendor demos to one working workflow in 9 weeks.

A mid-sized NZ accounting firm came to us evaluating AI tools to compete with the Big 4 firms' new offerings. They had been pitched by 23 vendors in six months. None had stuck.

We ran a Readiness Audit. Mapped their existing stack against the 23 candidate tools. Pruned the list to 4 on real fit (not feature parity). Live-piloted the top 3 inside the firm with 12 senior accountants over 4 weeks. One winner emerged clearly.

We deployed inside 9 weeks total. The firm is now using it daily across all 12 senior accountants. The other 22 vendor pitches have been cancelled. The MD has time back.

Common questions

What firms ask before they start.

How is this different from a regular IT or strategy consultant?

Most IT consultants stop at "here are the tools, good luck." Most strategy consultants stop at "here's a slide deck, good luck." We do both ends and the middle: clear audit, tools that fit, working implementation, and ongoing review. The deliverable is a workflow your team uses on Monday, not a deck the executive team reads once.

What does an engagement actually look like?

Most engagements start with a 30-minute call to scope the problem. From there, the typical sequence is a 2-week Readiness Audit, then 1-2 weeks of tool selection, then 4-12 weeks of workflow implementation. Some clients then move onto a fractional AI Director monthly retainer. Some hand it back to their internal team with our runbook. Both are fine.

What's the typical cost?

An end-to-end engagement (audit + tool selection + first workflow deployment) usually lands between $25k and $60k depending on scope and team size. Ongoing fractional AI Director is $2.8k+GST/month for a 4-hour commitment. Standalone services start at $4.5k. All quotes are fixed-fee, no hourly billing.

Do you work with regulated industries?

Yes, and this is where we add the most value. Financial advice (FAP-licensed firms), accounting, legal, and health all have specific rules about AI use, data residency, disclosure, and supervision. Craig's CFP and FAP background means we speak that language fluently.

What if we're not ready for AI yet?

Then we tell you. Plenty of firms aren't ready. Sometimes the bottleneck is data hygiene, sometimes team capability, sometimes leadership alignment. The Readiness Audit will tell you specifically what to fix first, in what order, before AI is even worth attempting. That conversation alone saves clients tens of thousands.

Is Coupland Consulting separate from Wealth Health?

Yes. Craig founded Wealth Health (Tauranga financial advisory firm) in 2014 and still runs it. Coupland Consulting is a separate practice, focused on AI strategy for businesses. Different brand, same person, same standards.
